The Tension of Attention

This collection is my attempt to combat, as author Carol Tulloch states the “aesthetics of invisibility” that oppression places upon Black people and other marginalized groups. Using maximalist concepts such as color, texture, and shine, I intend for each look to make a statement of purpose. Throughout history maximalism has had the unfortunate perception of being anti-intellectual, excessive, and frivolous. This collection fights against this discrimination, as maximalist concepts are used within my culture to regain visibility. I intend to show that there is in fact nuance and sophistication within Black culture’s use of maximalism. Using bold colors, hand manipulated knit lace patterns, and shine, I created this collection to exist beyond expectations and push limits to the point of tension, whether emotional or visual, to create spectacle and reclaim identity. Each look is a different way to sculpt soft materials on the body and by doing so, I transform each garment while evoking the sublime feeling of awe and wonder.
